    Expletive it

Expletive it memiliki peran yang sama dalam menggantikan atau menyembunyikan subjek dari suatu kalimat. Expletive atau impersonal it digunakan sebagai subject dari adjective (terkadang juga predicate noun) yang diikuti oleh adverbs. Example (It’s pleasent in the garden).
Expletive it sebagai sebuah subject yang memiliki arti tersendiri seperti:
    1. Identification (identifikasi)
-Who is it? It is Mary.
    2. Weather (Cuaca)
    -It’s cold outside.

Selain it, terdapat juga expleteive yang lain yaitu there. Sebagaimana kita ketahui bahwa there sebagai expletive tidak diartikan “disana” dalam bahasa Indonesia, melainkan tidak memiliki arti sepertihalnya it. Expeltive there disini merujuk pada noun atau pronoun yang dibcarakan, misalnya:
    • There is a book on the desk (= A book is on the desk).

Dalam banyak kalimat dengan jenis expeltive there seperti ini, kata kerja be mempunyai arti “ada” (exsist).
    • There are three kinds of TV programs that she likes to watch.
    • There are different ways to do it.
    3. There + be + noun + -ing participle

    • There is a sale going on at Matahari. (= A sale is going on at Matahari.)
